Butterfly Top

About 10 weeks ago, I pinned a mini Boden top with felt butterflies appliqued on it with the intention of sewing a knockoff.  I have other sewing that needed to be done *cough, cough* but instead I played around with making butterflies.:)

I cut out a small, medium, and large butterfly templates.

And used 9 different colors of polyester felt.  I used polyester as that was what I had on hand and I knew after making these shirts that it handles the washer and drier just fine.

The above picture shows 2 large, 4 medium, and 3 small butterflies but I ended up using 4 large, 3 medium, and 2 small after playing around with the placement on the t-shirt.

I used Wondertape to position the butterflies on the top.

On the underside, I fused interfacing to support the stitching for the body and antennas of the butterflies.

I used 2 strands of embroidery floss (that's what would fit in the first needle I grabbed!) and did a back stitch with french knots to finish the antennas.  Like the inspiration top, the stitching is done with different colors.  I had to raid my 13 year old's friendship bracelet supply box to get the different colors.;)

A flutter of Butterflies!

In case you're wondering about the top, it was made using the Not So Plain Tee pattern from Sewing Modkid Style.  I made it to be worn with the Jasper Vest and Jodhpurs that I sewed last week.  I apologize for not putting pictures up yet of the outfit on BK.  It's been in the 80's and very humid here.  While I do confess to torturing my kids sometimes, making them wear long sleeves, pants, and a vest in hot weather to take pictures outside isn't something I'm going to do. But it looks like cooler weather is supposed to be here next week...
