KCW: Day 2

P has been left out of the sewing queue here lately.  He doesn't really need any clothes and the only request he's made is for some more pajama pants.  But when Organic Cotton Plus contacted me to see if I would be interested in receiving fabric in exchange for an honest review*, it only took one look at their  Green Striped Organic Cotton Baby Rib for me to say yes and think of Patrick.

pattern:  Ottobre Design 04/2013 #39 "Linear"
size: 152 width, 158 length
fabric:  Green Striped Baby Rib from Organic Cotton Plus, light gray ribbing for neck binding and cuffs from my stash, same with the dark gray sweatshirt fleece for the pocket

P is my picky child when it comes to the way fabric feels.  Remember that burgundy and gray striped shirt I made him last year?  After wearing the shirt a few times, it ended up hidden in the back corner of a dresser drawer.  He liked the style but hated how "slinky" the fabric felt.  Turns out the jersey was a rayon/cotton blend.

He prefers 100% cotton fabrics for his clothes (that goes for RTW too).  But the fabric had better be soft and not scratchy!  The striped baby rib is definitely soft.  I was surprised when I opened the box at how soft it was.  And after several trips through the wash, it's even softer.  But not "slinky".;)

The shirt pattern is pretty much your standard Ottobre Design t-shirt.  The only thing different from other patterns I've sewn was that the cuff is one layer of ribbing with a hem vs. a folded in half cuff.

If you're like me and really don't know much about the difference between organic and conventional cotton, Organic Cotton Plus has a learning center page full of information.  I knew that pesticides were used on regular cotton but didn't realize that chemicals were used for soil prep and harvesting too.  It's eye opening to see that harsh chemicals are part of every process from planting to processing.  Eye opening and a bit scary!

*Disclaimer: I received 2 yards of this fabric in exchange for a fair, honest review.  As always, all opinions expressed are my own and in this case, my son's.;)
