K is starting high school on Tuesday. Wow, does time fly!
I still sew for her. Though it requires a lot more thought and discussion than sewing for the younger girls. And finding patterns that will fit is as much of a challenge as finding clothes in the store that fit.
patterns: Kitschy Coo Lady Skater and Grainline Studio Maritime Shorts
sizes: top, 1 and shorts, 0
fabric: Chez Ami cotton/lycra jersey and gray twill from Joann Fabrics
mods: dress to a peplum top, tutorial HERE and added length to the shorts and tweaked the fit in the back
When we were at K's school open house this past week, I noticed several young ladies wearing knit peplum tops. I came home and scoured the internet looking at RTW tops and contemplating how to go about making one. Then I remembered that Amanda had already shared a tutorial on how to make the Lady Skater Dress pattern into a peplum. Since I knew that the dress fit K well, it was a no brainer.
For this pair of Maritime Shorts, I pinched out about 1/2" from the bottom of the back of the shorts. I also used the rear pockets from this pattern and placed them approximately 1/2" closer to the center back. When K tried on the shorts before I sewed on the waistband, I decided to add darts to the back so that the shorts would lay nicer. I eyeballed it this go around but will make a change to my pattern pieces when I sew K another pair. (Not until next spring!) And I added an inch of length so that they can be worn to school.
All in all, I think the outfit turned out pretty cute.
